Background of the Study
Cultural erosion in Ijebu North Local Government Area, Ogun State, has emerged as a significant challenge to the survival of indigenous knowledge systems. As modernization and globalization intensify, traditional practices, languages, and belief systems are increasingly marginalized, leading to a gradual loss of cultural identity (Adebisi, 2023). Indigenous knowledge, passed down through generations, encompasses agricultural practices, medicinal wisdom, and artisanal crafts that are integral to community well-being and environmental sustainability (Babatunde, 2024). However, rapid urbanization, media influences, and educational shifts have contributed to the erosion of these traditional systems, diminishing community cohesion and cultural resilience. This study investigates the mechanisms through which cultural erosion affects the transmission and evolution of indigenous knowledge. It examines the role of formal education, economic pressures, and social change in accelerating cultural loss and explores strategies to revitalize indigenous practices. By integrating perspectives from cultural anthropology and educational theory, the research aims to offer insights into preserving traditional knowledge in the face of modern challenges (Folashade, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
In Ijebu North, cultural erosion driven by modernization is undermining indigenous knowledge systems. Traditional practices and local wisdom are being overshadowed by global cultural trends, leading to a decline in community identity and sustainable practices (Olatunji, 2023). The loss of indigenous knowledge threatens not only cultural diversity but also local livelihoods and environmental management. There is an urgent need to document and reinforce these systems before they vanish. This study seeks to identify the factors contributing to cultural erosion and to propose effective interventions for revitalizing indigenous knowledge (Temitope, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To document existing indigenous knowledge systems in Ijebu North.
To evaluate the impact of modernization on traditional cultural practices.
To recommend strategies for revitalizing indigenous knowledge.
Research Questions:
How is cultural erosion affecting indigenous knowledge in Ijebu North?
What factors contribute most significantly to the decline of traditional practices?
Which interventions can effectively preserve and revitalize indigenous knowledge systems?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Modernization significantly contributes to the erosion of indigenous knowledge.
H2: Economic and educational pressures accelerate the loss of traditional practices.
H3: Community-based revitalization programs can effectively restore indigenous knowledge.
Significance of the Study
This study is vital for educators, cultural practitioners, and policymakers by highlighting the adverse effects of cultural erosion on indigenous knowledge systems. The research informs strategies that protect and revive traditional practices, thereby enhancing cultural resilience and sustainable development. Its findings will contribute to preserving cultural diversity and strengthening community identity (Bolaji, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the effect of cultural erosion on indigenous knowledge systems in Ijebu North Local Government Area, Ogun State, focusing solely on traditional cultural practices and excluding modern technological influences.
Definitions of Terms:
Cultural Erosion: The gradual loss or dilution of traditional cultural practices and values.
